The opera last night was really entertaining. Alot of fellow CGSers were there including some predictable and some unpredictable faces. Bob was in the crowds as always. Anna Epp, Sarah Childress, and the Guyers were there. It was so good to see them. I especially love the Guyers. Thery are the kind of people that I don't know that well but know that they are awesome. They are fellow believers and sweet, sweet people. They opened their home to our guests for our wedding and they don't even know Brandon.
Rachel Pierson and her daughters were there last night. This was there first opera! What a strange choice. I hope they don't think all operas are like the one last night. I mean, I loved it, but I wouldn't exactly send a virgin opera goer to a modern opera with a counter tenor in tights for their first experience. I hope the Piersons will give it another go.
Now, not only do I think that ther opera was fabulous, but I also am going to have to disagree with the opinions of Dan and Vanessa about the PG-13 rating. Maybe it is PG-13 only for the bizareness level, but the "love scenes" were fine. Yes, you can see one girl's midriff for about 15 seconds, but if these scenes were PG-13 then you better not let your kids watch Shrek anymore.
So, my opinion, go see the opera. There are kids in the show. They have a huge part and they are really cute.

Yes, we went to our first opera. I got the same look from Carole C. when I told her it was my first opera- and the same words, "Interesting choice." (this was combined with an odd twisting of the eyebrows...very worrisome)
I began to think, seriously that I must have missed something. Maybe I fell asleep at some point.
Yes, Dan's voice was...a surprize. I made a point to greet him on Sunday morning, because I didn't think a man could make those sounds outside of Motown. He seemed very nice to talk to. The tights were lovely. I loved his cape, actually. I thought the fairy queen was as cute as a button, and sang beautifully. The king's side-kick was an odd fellow, but funny. His part, really made me think of a high school play.
Fairy costumes were just lovely, but the "lover's" costumes were common. It made me think that on opening night it was a dress rehearsal without much attention to the costumes. Until the comment about the greek attire, I thought maybe someone's costume had not arrived or something. (I realize that the idea was that these were contemporary, ordinary folks who stumbled into the fatastical world of fairies...but if that is so, then the actors didn't fit into either realm and what's up with that?) Also there was one of the thesbians whose costume didn't seem to fit in.
The children were darling, and very good. I think it went well past their bedtime, though (Aw, Mom!)
There was a lot going on, several sub plots. It was enjoyable overall and the set was nice.
Here's another thing: I heard that it was in English with "super titles." I just couldn't figure that out. Were the super titles going to be in Latin? Nope, they were in English, and very much appreciated!
Now, for the PG-13 rating. Possibly for the Fairy Queen's attempted suduction of the man-turned-donkey. It was a little sultry...might be considered "thematic material." It would definitely be a spring-board for discussion.
I did enjoy myself. The music was beautiful. I liked it better than Woody Allen's version.
